May 2017 Update

Over the past year we have supported a number of individual young sports people who may not otherwise have been able to pursue their sporting ambitions. The Foundation has also been able to help fund these worthwhile causes, which includes, but is not limited to:

Guernsey Football Association – Female Football Development Officer – Joelle Pengelley

We are coming to our third and final year supporting a Female Football Development Officer who continues to make tremendous strides in attracting more young players to the game. Joelle continues to work with schools and local community groups to increase the number of opportunities available for women and girls to take part in football. The Trustees are continually impressed with Joelle’s enthusiasm towards engaging more young girls into the sport. She continues to witness hundreds of young girls participating in Football in schools throughout the Bailiwick through her lunchtime and after school clubs every week. We were also pleased to hear that the girls she is inspiring in schools will be eligible to represent Guernsey in the Island Games when it returns to the island in 2021, and fielding a team of girls to enter the competition is her long term target going forward.

Guernsey Rugby Academy

We continue to support the Academy as they aim to engage more boys and girls in Rugby here in the Bailiwick. The Trustees were pleased to see the Colts U18’s squad pick up the Beau Sejour Trophy at the 2016 Sports Commission Sporting Achievement Awards in January for their U18’s continued outstanding performance. Oscar Webber also won a trophy to celebrate his outstanding achievement as a para-sport athlete with a learning impairment, which reinforced to us that the Academy are putting our funds to good use ensuring that it benefits those who need it most.

Guernsey Velo Club

Last year we provided them with funds to allow them to purchase a few sets of race wheels for young up and coming riders to benefit from the use of them in local and off-island competitions.

Guernsey Tigers Bowls Club

We have supported the travel costs of the U18 team who travelled to Scotland in April 2016 to compete in the Tri Nations.

Guernsey Swimming ClubLaura Le Cras

Now part of the British Performance Pathway, breaking personal bests and setting island records she is definitely one to watch for the future. We have supported Laura by subsidising the travel costs she incurred by representing Guernsey in a national competition.

Guernsey Judo Club – Lewis Bourgaize

We enabled him to attend training camps with the English National Squad training days. We were keen to follow his progress at the championships on Twitter.

Alderney Boxing Club

We subsidised the travel costs involved in sending a number of junior boxers off island to attend competitions and coaching sessions here in Guernsey.

Guernsey Softball Club

We supported them by subsidising the cost of providing them with new team kit for the Junior Development and Minis squads. We look forward to attending one of their training sessions in the next few weeks to see them train up on the grass and gravel diamonds at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre.

Guernsey Secondary Schools Football Association

We have recently agreed to support their team travelling to the Gothia Cup by subsidising the cost of travelling to Sweden for the competition. The Secretary of their Association assures us, from the previous squads who continue to talk about taking part, that it will be an experience not to forget so we will be following their progress with keen interest.

All of this requires considerable funding – over £23,000 in 2016 alone and over £116,000 since our launch in 2011. Together with commitments already made till the end of 2017, our total funding to date exceeds £130,000 which has enabled us to support many young Guernsey people participating in sport. We must say thank you to everybody who has supported us in the last year in addition to those who have supported us since 2011. You have helped us raise the much needed funds that will enable us to support young Guernsey people achieve through sport over the next few months and years to come.

You can follow all of our activity throughout the year on both of our social media channels – Facebook & Twitter.
